Design Leadership
Design leadership to me, is about leading teams navigating complexity with clarity, making thoughtful trade-offs, balancing vision with delivery. I empower my team by understanding individual strengths, identifying skill gaps , and supporting growth through mentorship, principles and trust.
01 Leadership in action
Team structures can vary, and I adapt my role accordingly. In some teams, when there are gaps, I step up helping teams prioritise features and user stories, align on sprint goals, and make trade-offs in agile environments. This helps teams stay focused, move faster, and make better decisions together.
02 Growth-focused mentor
I’ve been mentoring designers a lot of time in my career through regular meetings and day-to-day collaboration. I focus on knowledge sharing, constructive feedback, and helping junior designers build confidence in their thinking, not just their outputs. I found principle-based approach works effectively when it comes to coaching and mentoring.
03 Standards that guide
We set universal standards we hold ourselves accountable to, like explore multiple ideas before having one, experiment rather than debate, I’m not the user and ensure every pixel has a reason.
04 Clarity with accountability
When things need correcting, I’m direct but supportive. I clearly outline what needs to happen, the timeframe, and the implications if progress isn’t achieved. I’ve found that clarity creates accountability without damaging trust.
What my mentees say…
My design superpowers
-
I believe people come to work with good intentions and want to do their best. I support others by mentoring junior designers and step in when needed to create alignment, helping teams work confidently toward shared goals.
I value collaborative, psychologically safe environments and enjoy working with cross-functional teams to bring thoughts together.
-
I bring a strong enterprise background that helps me navigate complex ecosystems and ambiguous problem spaces. At the same time, my start-up experience has equipped me with a lean, resourceful approach, using practical tools and lightweight processes to ensure work is delivered on time and within budget.
-
I enjoy solving complex design problems with multiple layers, diverse stakeholders, and sometimes competing needs. I focus on the bigger picture, helping teams understand the ‘why’ behind the work while balancing creativity, technology, business goals, and user needs.
Navigating this complexity requires prioritising what truly matters and aligning the team, so we deliver solutions that are both innovative and practical, with clear impact.
